Boys & Voices
9, 10, 11 September 2005
Melbourne High School
LATE REGISTRATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED UNTIL MONDAY 5 SEPTEMBER
People of all cultures were born to speak as they were to sing. Boys and girls delightfully discover the fun of organised sounds as soon as they can articulate. They revel in recreating familiar sounds and the excitement of communal expression. Boys need music and they love to sing. However, in the process of developing a masculine identity, boys struggle with many concerns including how they approach anything musical or artistic. Something occurs in the adolescent years to somewhat inhibit their will to explore this area. In these formative years, they often perceive society saying that this is not a particularly suitable thing to do and real men should be wary of such expression.
Through inspiring addresses, invigorating workshops and joyful singing, this symposium aims to investigate and generate discussions on the following vexed questions:
• Who in society is fostering this perception?
• How is society still doing this?
• What can we, as male or female teachers, do to give back to the boys their confidence and spirit to sing?
After all, boys, like girls, were born to love music and possess an innate desire to sing with each other.
This symposium is presented by the Association of Music Educators (Vic) Inc, with the support and participation of Melbourne High School. aMuse extends a warm invitation to members of ASME, VOSA, KMEIA, ANCA, ABODA, VMTA, AMTA, and ANATS to attend this symposium at the member’s rate.
