The Artists in Schools program creates the opportunity for practising professional artists to work with young people in Victorian primary and secondary schools. It involves schools and communities in creative projects while providing students, teachers and artists with diverse and challenging learning experiences. The program generates innovative ways to engage students from Prep to Year 10 across all strands of the curriculum.
The Artists in Schools program provides grants of approx. $5,000 for
artists to work in a school for up to 21 days. Applications from schools seeking funding are available from the website by 1 July and are due at Arts Victoria in late September for projects commencing in the following year.
There are many ways to involve artists in a school program. Artists in
Schools projects provide opportunities to enrich the whole curriculum,
not just the Arts. The Artists
in Schools program provides innovative
ways of engaging students in the middle years, professional development
for teachers and improved learning outcomes for all. The Artists in Schools program accepts applications from Victorian primary and secondary government and non-government schools, including schools for students with special needs.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s concert for secondary students, Meet the Music, will explore different musical techniques – the use of sound, colour, rhythm and texture – employed by some of the great composers.
Up Close and Musical
Years 10,11 and 12
The workshop performance Up Close and Musical provides specialist music students with the opportunity to experience an in-depth examination of composers’ ideas. With the MSO, the conductor/presenter will explore and demonstrate the use of compositional devices, musical style and structure using two major works of the orchestral repertoire.

Open Rehearsals
Years 7 to 12
Four Melbourne Symphony Orchestra rehearsals are open for a strictly limited number of students to attend during the year. The opportunity to observe the MSO in rehearsal with international conductors and soloists is an experience not to be missed by any music student.
Community Outreach Program
The MSO Community Outreach program explores the capacity of a symphony orchestra to contribute to the lives of all members of schools and the wider community beyond the concert platform. It looks at the power of music to connect people, and creates opportunities for groups and individuals to interact and collaborate with musicians from the Orchestra in diverse ways. Current projects include short-term residencies in schools; partnerships with other arts organisations, including theatre companies and galleries; workshops alongside music therapists; and interactive performances in community centres and neighbourhood houses.
