The Australian Music Centre was established in 1974 to facilitate and encourage the performance and understanding of music by Australian composers throughout the world. The Centre's Music Resource Library houses 12,500 works by more than 460 composers. The collection focuses on contemporary Australian music and, in many cases, is the only source for certain works. Experienced library staff are available to answer enquiries by phone, fax, email or in person.

The Music Resource Library holds recordings, books and published scores, biographical files on more than one thousand Australian composers, press clippings, reviews and concert programs, analyses, photographs and an extensive collection of porgram notes. Many of these are available for hire or sale and can be loaned to members.

Members of the Australian Music Centre are entitled to borrow 10 items for up to 4 weeks. They also receive discounts on purchases and a bimonthly newsletter, calendar and authoritative bi-annual journal, sounds Australian, which covers issues in Australian music.

The website of the Australian Music Centre is accessible to all. It includes a fully searchable online library catalogue, biographies and photos of over 450 composers and many other features. For full details of the Australian Music Centre's services, visit www.amcoz.com.au

One of Australia's hidden musical treasures is located at the University of Melbourne, next to Melba Hall on Royal Parade. Conceived and built by the internationally renowned Australian-born composer and world class pianist, Percy Grainger, this is one of the few autobiographical museums in the world.

The Grainger Museum building is currently closed to the public for major building conservation and maintenance works.  For the duration of our closure, access to the collection for general interest or research purposes can be arranged by contacting the Curator or Assistant Curator. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

he Collection of the Victorian Music Library includes:

Approximately 60,000 items of sheet music [Catalogued on Index Cards]

Piano Music Solos — mainly used by performers and teachers for students Four hands piano music

Percussion music - a particularly large and comprehensive collection purchased and imported by percussion teachers most of which is not available elsewhere in Australia.

String orchestra music — used particularly by school and some community string groups

Orchestral music — mainly for school performance

Band music — generally used by newer school bands

Solo instrumental — including music for AMEB exams and the VCE exams. The collection is largely solo string, woodwind and brass — mainly used by teachers or students when selecting music for exam syllabus in order that the performer chooses music particularly suitable for them.

Voice Music — general use

Choral Music — general use

Chamber Music — mainly used by inexperienced musicians for non-matching standards of players, by teachers wishing to encourage ensemble playing for school use or by professionals who cannot obtain the music commercially as it is out of print.
This section tries to support the material used for Musica Viva (when appropriate repertoire is performed), the local chamber music competitions and the international chamber competition so that this facilitates the educational achievements of students and the local community. Many ensembles ask to borrow the works to play through before they hear these performed at concerts.

The VML has an extensive card-based index of sheet music. Whilst work has commenced on a computer-based catalogue, until this is further progressed the best way of becoming acquainted with this significant collection is to visit, use the card index and hire your sheet music at the Library.
